About Carrauntoohil

Carrauntoohil rises at the heart of Macgillycuddy's Reeks, west of Killarney. Beenkeragh, 0.9 km north, and Caher, 1.2 km south-west, are its high neighbours, and the Hag's Tooth pinnacle juts from the ridge to the north-east. At 1039 m it is the county top of Kerry, a Furth, a Hewitt, a Marilyn, an Arderin and a Vandeleur-Lynam.

Most walkers start at Cronin's Yard and walk into the Hag's Glen. The Devil's Ladder, a steep gully of loose rock and scree, climbs from the head of the glen to the col with Cnoc na Toinne, and a path then goes up to the summit. Brother O'Shea's Gully is an alternative. The Coomloughra Horseshoe, from the west, links Beenkeragh and Caher on narrow, exposed ridges.

The Devil's Ladder is eroded, with loose stones knocked down by those above. The summit plateau is broad, and in mist walkers have descended the wrong way towards cliffs. Take a map and compass and know your descent line.

Carrauntoohil is 1,039 m (3,407 ft) high with 1,039 m of prominence. It is in Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Ireland. OS grid reference V803844. It is the highest of the 24 summits Peakify lists in Macgillycuddy's Reeks. The nearest summits are Na Cnamha (0.4 km), Beenkeragh (0.9 km) and Hag's Tooth (0.9 km).

Is Carrauntoohil dangerous?
