About Knockboy
Knockboy (705 m) is the highest summit in County Cork. It stands in the Shehy Mountains on the Cork and Kerry border, a rough area of rocky knolls, small lakes and heather between Kenmare and Bantry. Knockboy North Top (651 m) lies 0.6 km north, and Caoinkeen (693 m) is 2.6 km north. The nearest higher hill is Mangerton Mountain (838 m), 18.9 km north near Killarney.
The terrain around the summit is broken and knobbly, with outcrops of sandstone and wet hollows between them. Paths are scarce, and you will pick your own line for much of the way.
With 609 m of prominence, the summit gives a wide view over the hills of west Cork and south Kerry towards Bantry Bay.
