About Lugnaquilla
Lugnaquilla stands in the southern Wicklow Mountains between Glenmalure and the Glen of Imaal. The top is a wide, grassy dome with a cairn and trig pillar, and two great corries, the North Prison and South Prison, cut into its flanks. Cloghernagh lies 2.5 km east and Benleagh 2.4 km north. It is the county top of Wicklow, a Furth, a Hewitt, a Marilyn, an Arderin and a Vandeleur-Lynam.
From Glenmalure, the popular route climbs from Baravore up Fraughan Rock Glen or the Zig Zags and onto the plateau. Routes from the west start in the Glen of Imaal. The upper slopes are grass and peat, with boggy patches.
The Glen of Imaal is an army artillery range, so check firing times and obey the red flags before walking on that side. In mist the summit plateau is featureless, and the corrie edges are close to the walking lines, so take a compass bearing off the top.
