About Mweelrea

Mweelrea rises from the Atlantic coast at the mouth of Killary Harbour. Its summit sits at the western end of a curving ridge that runs east over Ben Lugmore to Ben Bury, enclosing a deep coum. Steep cliffs drop to Doo Lough on the east. It is a county top, a Hewitt, a Marilyn, an Arderin and a Vandeleur-Lynam.

Walkers approach from Delphi, at the eastern foot of the range, and climb onto Ben Bury before following the ridge west. The ridge over Ben Lugmore is narrow in places with steep drops into the coum. Routes from the west climb from the coast near Uggool. All lines involve rough ground and stream crossings.

In mist the cliffs on the coum side and the steep ground make navigation serious, and rivers on the approaches rise fast after rain. On a clear day you see out across Clew Bay and the islands.
