About Sawel
Sawel (678 m) is the highest point of the Sperrin Mountains and the county top of Tyrone, on its border with County Londonderry. It is a broad, grassy and boggy hill rising from the Glenelly valley to the south. Dart Mountain (619 m) is 1.8 km south-west, linked by a shallow col, and the two are often climbed together. With 580 m of prominence and nothing higher nearby, Sawel looks out over much of mid-Ulster.
A common approach starts from the minor road that crosses the hills between Sawel and Dart, or from Sperrin village in the Glenelly valley. A fence line runs across the hill and gives a useful handrail to the summit. The ground is grassy higher up and wet and boggy lower down.
