About Barrslievenaroy
Barrslievenaroy (702 m) is the high point of the Maumturks, the long quartzite ridge that runs north-west to south-east across Connemara in County Galway, east of the Inagh valley. The ridge is a jumble of bare rock, small cols and lochans. Barrslievenaroy East Top (659 m) lies 0.6 km east, while Binn Chaonaigh (634 m) and Binn Mhairg (612 m) sit to the south-east and Cnoc na hUilleann (605 m) 2.0 km north-west. Across the Inagh valley, Binn an Choire (711 m) in the Twelve Bens is the nearest higher summit, 7.7 km west.
Most people reach the summit from the Inagh valley side, climbing steep slopes onto the ridge, or as part of a longer traverse of the range. The ground is rocky and broken, with little in the way of paths, and progress is slower than the height suggests.
Navigation on the Maumturks is hard in mist: the ridge twists, and several cols and spurs look alike. A compass bearing at each col is worth the time.
