About Maumtrasna
Maumtrasna (682 m) is the highest summit of the Partry Mountains, which rise west of Lough Mask on the border of County Mayo and County Galway. The top is a wide, peaty plateau rather than a peak, with steep corrie walls and valleys cutting into its edges. With 609 m of prominence it stands clear of its surroundings; the nearest higher hill is Ben Gorm (699 m), 10.1 km west above Killary Harbour.
The plateau is boggy and featureless, with peat hags and few paths. The edges are steeper and rockier, and the valleys that run into the massif give the more interesting lines of ascent.
On the flat top the summit is hard to pin down in mist, so take a map and compass.
