About Benbaun
Benbaun rises at the heart of the Twelve Bens, the cluster of steep, bare quartzite peaks north of Ballynahinch in County Galway. Binn Fraoigh lies 0.9 km north-west and the Binn Bhraoin tops line up 1.8 km to 2.4 km south. Mweelrea, 12.9 km north, is the nearest higher ground. It is the county top of Galway, a Hewitt, a Marilyn, an Arderin and a Vandeleur-Lynam.
The Bens are rough walking, with scree, slabs and steep ground on most lines. Walkers climb Benbaun from the valleys that run into the range, often as part of a longer round. Paths are faint in places.
Quartzite is slippery when wet and the steep ground gives few easy escapes, so it suits experienced walkers. On a clear day the view runs over the Connemara lakes and coast.
Benbaun is 729 m (2,392 ft) high with 686 m of prominence. It is in The Twelve Bens, Ireland. OS grid reference L785539. It is the highest of the 16 summits Peakify lists in The Twelve Bens.
