About Carn Dearg
Carn Dearg is the best-known of the Monadhliath Munros, the rolling plateau hills north-west of Newtonmore. At 946m (3,104 ft) it rises at the eastern edge of a broad upland, with crags on its east face above Gleann Ballach. Carn Ban lies 0.9 km to the north-west, Carn Dearg SE Top 0.7 km south, and Carn Ballach 2.2 km north.
Most walkers start in Glen Banchor, at the end of the minor road west of Newtonmore. A track and path lead up the glen to Gleann Ballach, and from there you climb onto the ridge and follow the edge to the summit. A longer day continues north over Carn Ballach and on across the plateau.
The Monadhliath plateau is wide and featureless, with peat hags and few landmarks. In cloud you need to navigate with care, and in winter the plateau is exposed to the wind.
Carn Dearg is 946 m (3,103 ft) high with 591 m of prominence. It is in Highland, Scotland. It is the 269th highest of the 1,458 summits Peakify lists in Highland. The nearest summits are Carn Dearg SE Top (0.7 km), Carn Ban (0.9 km) and Carn Macoul (2.0 km).
