About Croaghaun

Croaghaun rises at the western end of Achill Island in County Mayo. From the south and east it is a grassy hill; on the north and west it drops in sea cliffs among the highest in Europe. Croaghaun SW Top sits 0.6 km south-west. It is a Hewitt, a Marilyn, an Arderin and a Vandeleur-Lynam, and its prominence matches its height of 688 m.

Walkers start at Keem Bay or near Lough Acorrymore, the reservoir on its eastern side, and climb grassy slopes to the ridge. The ground is open grass and heather with no formed path for much of the way. Many walkers go over the SW Top and follow the cliff edge.

The cliff edge is sheer and unfenced. In mist or high wind, keep well back from it. The view on a clear day runs along the Achill coast to Clare Island.
