About Cuilcagh

Cuilcagh (666 m) straddles the border between County Fermanagh and County Cavan, and is the county top of both. It is a long, flat-topped mountain with a steep escarpment of grit and sandstone along its northern edge, rising from wide blanket bog. With 605 m of prominence, nothing higher stands near it. The Shannon Pot, the traditional source of the River Shannon, lies on its southern side in Cavan.

Most walkers use the Legnabrocky Trail from the Cuilcagh car park near Marble Arch Caves. A gravel track crosses the bog, then a boardwalk and a long staircase climb the escarpment to a viewing platform. The summit and its cairn lie a short way beyond, over open, boggy ground. Stay on the boardwalk across the protected bog.

The staircase is steep and exposed to wind, and it gets busy at weekends. From the platform you look out over the lakes of Fermanagh.
