About Errigal
Errigal rises from the bogland of north-west Donegal, at the north end of the Derryveagh Mountains. Its pale quartzite scree makes it a landmark from far around. Mackoght lies 1.3 km north-east and Dunlewey Lough and the Poisoned Glen lie to the south. It is the county top of Donegal, a Hewitt, a Marilyn, an Arderin and a Vandeleur-Lynam.
The standard route starts at the car park on the road east of the mountain and crosses boggy ground before climbing the steep, scree-covered east shoulder. Near the top, the path reaches a narrow ridge linking two summits. A few minutes along the crest brings you to the higher one.
Loose scree makes the upper climb hard work, and the summit ridge is narrow with steep drops on either side. Take care there in wind or wet. The view takes in the Derryveagh Mountains, Tory Island and the north Donegal coast.
Errigal is 751 m (2,464 ft) high with 685 m of prominence. It is in Derryveagh, Glendowan, Ireland. OS grid reference B928207.
