About Muckish
Muckish stands at the north-east end of the Derryveagh Mountains, inland from Falcarragh. Its name means "pig's back", and from the coast the hill shows a long, level top with steep sides. Errigal, the nearest higher peak, lies 11 km south-west.
The common route starts at the Muckish Gap on the south side and climbs a steep path of scree and broken rock onto the plateau. A harder line, the Miners' Path, climbs the north face through the old quartz sand workings. It is steep and loose in places, and you need care in the wet.
The summit plateau is a wide field of stones with a large cairn. Views run along the north Donegal coast to Tory Island and back to Errigal.
