About Fan Gyhirych
Fan Gyhirych rises above the upper Tawe and Cray valleys in Fforest Fawr, the stretch of upland between the Black Mountain and the central Beacons. It is a Hewitt, a Nuttall and a Marilyn. Like its neighbours, it has a gentle grassy back on the south side and a steeper edge facing north. Fan Fraith sits 1.1 km to the south-east and makes an easy addition, and Fan Hir, on the Black Mountain escarpment 5.3 km to the west, is the nearest higher ground.
Most walkers start near Cray Reservoir on the main road through the valley and climb onto the open moor, following the edge to the summit. The ground is grass and tussock, wet in places, with few clear paths away from the edge. You can link Fan Gyhirych with Fan Fraith and come back the same way.
The top is broad, so in cloud you need a compass bearing to find the way off on the right side. On a clear day you look west to the Carmarthen Fans and east to Pen y Fan and Corn Du.
