Great Whernside reaches 704m (2,310ft) on the watershed between Wharfedale and Nidderdale. It is a long, heavy fell with limestone lower slopes and a crown of gritstone boulders along the summit ridge, where the trig point sits. It is a Hewitt, Nuttall and Marilyn, and it is a separate hill from Whernside in the west of the Dales.
The standard route climbs from Kettlewell, following Dowber Gill Beck and then the path past Hag Dyke, a scout hostel, to the summit ridge. The upper slopes are peaty and boggy, and the final climb crosses gritstone boulders.
The summit looks over Wharfedale to the west and the moors of Nidderdale to the east. In mist the boulder-strewn ridge needs care, and the peat on the approach turns to deep bog after rain. Kettlewell has pubs and a shop for the end of the day.
