About Kilclooney Mountain

Kilclooney Mountain (792 m) is the highest point of the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford, and many walkers know the summit as Fauscoum. It sits on the edge of the Comeragh plateau, a wide, boggy tableland ringed by steep corries. Knockaunapeebra (724 m) is 1.0 km south-west, Carrignagower (767 m) 1.6 km north-west, and Coumfea (742 m) 2.3 km west. Nothing higher stands nearby.

The classic way up is the Coumshingaun loop from the car park at Kilclooney Wood on the east side. You climb the southern arm of the corrie, with some easy scrambling on rock, follow the rim round to the summit, and descend the northern arm. The cliffs of Coumshingaun drop to a dark lake below you for much of the walk. From the plateau side, the ground is peat hags and bog with few features.

The plateau is easy to get lost on in mist. Stay well back from the corrie edges in poor visibility and take a bearing before you leave the rim.
