Kinder Scout reaches 636m (2,087ft), the highest point in the Peak District and the county top of Derbyshire. It is a broad plateau of peat and heather cut by deep groughs, rimmed by gritstone edges with weathered tors. Edale lies below its southern edge and Hayfield to the west. It is a Hewitt, Nuttall and Marilyn.
From Edale you can climb Grindsbrook Clough, a rocky ravine with a scramble at its head, or follow the Pennine Way up Jacob's Ladder to Kinder Low. From Hayfield, paths pass Kinder Reservoir and climb William Clough to the western edge. Most walkers follow the edge paths, which are clearer than the plateau.
The true high point lies on the open plateau, unmarked and hard to find, while the trig point at Kinder Low sits nearby on the edge. Kinder Downfall, on the western edge, is the tallest waterfall in the Peak District, and in a strong westerly the wind blows its water back up as spray. The Mass Trespass of walkers onto Kinder helped win public access to the hills.
