Cac Carn Beag is the highest top of Lochnagar, the big granite mountain south of Balmoral in Royal Deeside. It is a Munro and a Marilyn. The north-east corrie holds a dark loch beneath a curving wall of cliffs, and climbers know those cliffs for their winter routes. Meikle Pap lies 1.6 km to the east and Cuidhe Crom 2.0 km to the south-east.
The standard route starts at the Spittal of Glenmuick. A track crosses the glen and climbs to the col below Meikle Pap. From there you climb a steep, stony path known as the Ladder onto the plateau and follow the rim of the corrie to the summit tor. A popular round continues over the plateau and descends by the Glas Allt waterfall to Loch Muick.
The plateau is exposed to wind and in cloud the path along the corrie rim runs close to the cliff edge. Cornices form there in winter.
