About Mickle Fell
Mickle Fell reaches 790m (2,592ft) on the high moors between Teesdale and the upper Eden Valley. It is a long, flat-topped ridge of peat and grass, far from roads, and you may not meet another walker all day. Knock Fell, the nearest higher hill, lies 10.2km to the north-west. It is a Hewitt, Nuttall and Marilyn, the historic county top of Yorkshire and a current county top.
The fell lies inside the Warcop military training area. You can walk to the summit on set permitted routes on non-firing days, so check the range access arrangements before you go.
The ground is wet and pathless in places, with few landmarks. In mist you need confident navigation on the long plateau. The approaches cross wet moorland with peat hags, and you should wear boots that cope with bog. The nearest settlements are in upper Teesdale and around Brough, a long way from the summit.
