About Rannerdale Knotts
Rannerdale Knotts stands on the east shore of Crummock Water, between the lake and the small valley of Rannerdale. At 355m it is one of the lowest Wainwrights, but its crest is a proper rocky ridge with steep flanks. Whiteless Pike rises 1.5 km to the north-east and Grasmoor fills the skyline 2.2 km to the north.
The quickest way up starts from the small car parks at Cinderdale Common or Hause Point on the lakeside road. A steep, stepped path climbs the north-west end of the ridge to the summit. A gentler line comes from Buttermere village along the back of the ridge, and you can make a loop by returning through Rannerdale. Expect rock steps near the top and a few loose sections.
Rannerdale is known for its bluebells in spring, and the valley paths get busy then. From the summit you see the length of Crummock Water, Mellbreak across the lake, and the High Stile ridge above Buttermere.
