Schiehallion stands between Loch Rannoch and Loch Tummel in Highland Perthshire, and from the west it shows a near-perfect cone. It is a Munro and a Marilyn. Nevil Maskelyne used the hill's regular shape in an experiment to measure the density of the Earth. Meall Garbh, the nearest higher hill, lies 13.0 km to the south-west.
The standard route starts at the Braes of Foss car park on the east side. The John Muir Trust rebuilt the path, which climbs the long east ridge on a good surface. Higher up the path gives way to a long ridge of quartzite boulders before the summit.
The boulder field is slow and awkward, and it hides the line of the path in mist. On the way down, follow the east ridge with care, as wandering off it leads onto steep ground on the flanks.
