Sgor an Lochain Uaine stands on the western rim of the Lairig Ghru, between Braeriach 2.2 km to the north and Cairn Toul 1.0 km to the south-east. Walkers call it the Angel's Peak. It takes its name from the small lochan in the corrie below its eastern cliffs, and its pointed top looks down into the huge hollow of An Garbh Choire.
Most people climb it as part of a traverse linking Braeriach and Cairn Toul. From the north you start at the Sugar Bowl car park, cross the Chalamain Gap into the Lairig Ghru and climb onto the Braeriach plateau. From the south you walk in from the Linn of Dee past Corrour Bothy and climb Cairn Toul first. Both approaches make long days over rough, high ground.
The plateau around the Wells of Dee is broad and featureless. In cloud you need map and compass work, and in winter cornices build along the corrie edges.
