About Slievenamon
Slievenamon (720 m) rises on its own from the farmland of south Tipperary, between Clonmel and Kilkenny. With 642 m of prominence and no higher ground for some distance, it dominates the view across the Suir valley, and the nearest higher hill is Knockanaffrin (755 m), 15.5 km south in the Comeraghs. The summit holds a large, ancient cairn and a trig pillar.
The usual way up starts from a car park on the south side, near Kilcash, and follows a clear, well-trodden path straight up the hillside. The path is steep in its middle section and can be muddy, but needs no route-finding in good weather. Other approaches cross rougher heather and bog with fewer paths.
Because the hill stands alone, you get a wide view from the top: the Comeragh and Knockmealdown mountains to the south, the Galtees to the west and the flat midlands to the north. The song "Slievenamon" has made the hill well known across Ireland.
