About The Saddle
The Saddle rises on the south side of Glen Shiel in Kintail, a complex mountain of rocky ridges and corries. It is a Munro and a Marilyn. Sgurr na Forcan lies 0.4 km to the east at the top of the Forcan Ridge, and Spidean Dhomhuill Bhric 1.4 km to the west. Sgurr na Sgine stands 2.0 km to the south-east, and Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe, the nearest higher hill, 5.1 km to the north-east across the glen.
The classic ascent starts on the Glen Shiel road near Achnangart. A stalkers' path climbs to the shoulder of Meallan Odhar, and the Forcan Ridge then rises over rock to Sgurr na Forcan. A short traverse with an awkward descent leads on to The Saddle. Walkers who prefer to avoid the scrambling can climb to the Bealach Coire Mhalagain and approach from the south-east.
The Forcan Ridge is exposed and narrow, and the descent from Sgurr na Forcan towards The Saddle gives the trickiest moves. Treat it as a winter mountaineering route under snow.
The Saddle is 1,012 m (3,319 ft) high with 334 m of prominence. It is in Highland, Scotland. It is the 121st highest of the 1,458 summits Peakify lists in Highland. The nearest summits are The Saddle - Trig Point (0.1 km), The Saddle North Top (0.3 km) and The Saddle East Top (0.3 km).
It is an exposed, narrow scramble on good rock. Most of it is easy for confident scramblers, but the descent off Sgurr na Forcan needs care.
Yes. You can reach the summit from the Bealach Coire Mhalagain on the south-east side and avoid the Forcan Ridge.
