Am Basteir sits on the northern Cuillin ridge on Skye, above Sligachan. It is a Munro, a narrow wedge of gabbro with a sheer north face and the Bhasteir Tooth jutting from its western end. Sgurr nan Gillean lies 0.6 km to the east, Bruach na Frithe 0.5 km to the west, and Sgurr a' Fionn Choire 0.2 km to the south-west.
The approach starts at Sligachan. A path crosses the moor and climbs into Coire a' Bhasteir or the Fionn Choire to reach Bealach a' Bhasteir at the foot of the east ridge. From the bealach you scramble up the narrow, exposed east ridge to the summit. A rock step partway along gives the hardest move, and many walkers turn back there or bring a rope.
The Cuillin gabbro is rough and grippy, but the rock is magnetic in places and upsets compasses. Plan your line off the ridge before cloud comes in.
