Ben Alder stands in the empty country between Loch Ericht and Loch Ossian, far from any road. It is a Munro and a Marilyn, with a vast summit plateau ringed by cliffs and corries. Beinn Bheoil lies 2.1 km to the east across the Bealach Breabag, and Sgor Iutharn 2.6 km to the north.
Most walkers start at Dalwhinnie and cycle or walk the track along Loch Ericht towards Culra. From the Culra area the Long Leachas ridge climbs to the plateau, with easy scrambling in places, and the Short Leachas gives a similar line. Another approach comes from Corrour station on the West Highland Line. The full outing makes a very long day, and many people carry camping gear or link it with Beinn Bheoil.
The plateau is broad and featureless, with cliffs on its eastern rim. In cloud, navigation needs care, and in winter cornices form above the corries.
Ben Alder is 1,148 m (3,766 ft) high with 783 m of prominence. It is in Highland, Scotland. It is the 14th highest of the 1,458 summits Peakify lists in Highland. The nearest summits are Sron Bealach Beithe (1.1 km), Sgor Iutharn (2.6 km) and Meall an t-Slugain (1.9 km).
