Creag Meagaidh rises north of Loch Laggan, between Glen Spean and Strathspey. It is a Munro and a Marilyn, and its lower slopes form a National Nature Reserve. The mountain is a broad plateau with long arms. Coire Ardair, on its eastern side, holds a big cirque of cliffs above a lochan, and those cliffs give some of Scotland's best-known winter climbs. Puist Coire Ardair lies 1.9 km to the east and Stob Poite Coire Ardair 1.7 km to the north-east.
The standard route starts at Aberarder on the road along Loch Laggan. A good path follows the Allt Coire Ardair up into the corrie. From the lochan you climb steep ground to the Window, the obvious notch on the western skyline, and then turn south-west across the plateau to the summit.
The summit plateau is wide, and in cloud the cliffs of Coire Ardair are close by. Use a compass, and expect cornices on the corrie rim in winter.
