About Great Borne
Great Borne closes the western end of the long ridge that runs from Red Pike over Starling Dodd. It stands above the north-east shore of Ennerdale Water, with the Floutern Pass on its north side separating it from the Loweswater fells. Starling Dodd is 1.9 km east along the ridge, Hen Comb lies 1.9 km north-east and Gavel Fell 2.3 km north.
The direct route starts at the Bowness Knott car park in Ennerdale and climbs beside Rake Beck. The ground is steep and rough, with heather and rock, and it eases near the top. From Loweswater you can walk up to Floutern Tarn and climb from the pass. Many walkers add Great Borne to a traverse of the ridge from Red Pike and Starling Dodd.
The summit looks down on Ennerdale Water and out to the coast. It sees fewer walkers than the fells further east on the ridge.
