About High Raise

High Raise stands in the middle of the Lake District as the highest point of the central fells. Its summit, High White Stones, is a wide grassy plateau with a trig pillar and a stone wind shelter. Sergeant Man lies 0.8km to the south-east and Thunacar Knott 1.5km south, both on the high ground behind the Langdale Pikes, with Pavey Ark 1.7km south.

From Great Langdale the usual line climbs beside Stickle Ghyll to Stickle Tarn, then over Sergeant Man to the top. From Grasmere a path follows Easedale past Easedale Tarn and up to the plateau, and from Borrowdale you can climb out of Stonethwaite to Greenup Edge and turn south-west. Expect pitched paths low down and wet, peaty ground on top.

The plateau has few landmarks in cloud. Sergeant Man's rocky knob is the easiest point to find, and a compass bearing from there leads you to the trig pillar. Because the fell sits at the centre of the district, the clear-day view takes in most of the main Lakeland ranges.
