Ingleborough reaches 723m (2,372ft) in the western Yorkshire Dales. Its stepped profile comes from layers of limestone, shale and a gritstone cap, which ends in a broad flat summit plateau ringed by the remains of an Iron Age hillfort wall. Simon Fell lies 1.5km north-east, and Whernside 7.0km to the north across Chapel-le-Dale. It is a Hewitt, Nuttall and Marilyn, and part of the Yorkshire Three Peaks walk.
From Clapham you walk up through the Ingleborough Estate past Ingleborough Cave and the pothole of Gaping Gill, then climb to the plateau. From Ingleton a path climbs by Crina Bottom to the summit. From Chapel-le-Dale a flagged path crosses the moor and climbs a steep rock step onto the top.
The summit has a trig point and a cross-shaped wind shelter. Cliffs ring the edge of the plateau, so in mist find the right descent path before you leave.
