About Manod Mawr

Manod Mawr rises on the east side of the Ffestiniog valley, above the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog and the village of Manod. It is a Hewitt, a Nuttall and a Marilyn. Its north side holds a large slate quarry, and Manod Mawr North Top lies 1.2 km to the north. Llyn Manod sits in the hollow between Manod Mawr and its smaller neighbour, Manod Bach. The nearest higher hill is Allt-fawr, 5.1 km to the north-west across the valley.

The usual walk starts in Manod and climbs on lanes and tracks to Llyn Manod, then heads up the rough slopes to the summit. The ground mixes grass, heather and rock, and the quarry workings on the north side are fenced in places. Keep away from the quarry edges.

From the top you look across to the Moelwynion and Allt-fawr, and on a clear day out to the Rhinogydd and the coast. During the Second World War the quarry inside the hill held paintings from the National Gallery.
