About Mynydd Mawr
Mynydd Mawr stands on its own at the head of the Nantlle valley, with Llyn Cwellyn below its eastern slopes and Rhyd Ddu nearby. From the north-west the hill looks like a resting elephant, and locals call it that. On the south side the long cliffs of Craig y Bera fall towards Drws-y-Coed. Across that valley the Nantlle Ridge runs west, with Y Garn 2.4 km south-east and Trum y Ddysgl, the nearest higher hill, 3.1 km south.
The usual way up starts near Llyn Cwellyn and climbs through forestry to the open east ridge, then over grass and stones to the top. The path above Craig y Bera follows the cliff edge, so keep to it in cloud.
The summit gives a close view of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) across the Cwellyn valley.
