About Sallows

Sallows rises between the Troutbeck and Kentmere valleys in the south-eastern Lake District. It is a rounded, grassy fell with a small summit cairn, lower and gentler than the Kentmere Horseshoe fells to its north. Sour Howes sits 1.2 km to the south-west on the same broad ridge, and Yoke, the first top of the Ill Bell ridge, lies 2.8 km north.

Most walkers come up the Garburn Pass, the old stony track that links Troutbeck and Kentmere. From the top of the pass you leave the track and follow a wall and a path over grass to the summit. You can start from either valley, and a loop over Sallows and Sour Howes makes a short half-day. Parking in Kentmere is limited, so arrive early or start from Troutbeck.

The ground is easy underfoot apart from wet patches near the wall. From the top you look across to Windermere and up the Kentmere valley to the higher fells of the horseshoe.
