About Great Calva
Great Calva stands in Skiddaw Forest, the open moorland basin behind Skiddaw. From the south it looks like a neat pyramid, while from Knott it shows as a modest rise. Knott, the nearest higher hill, lies 1.9km north, and Bakestall 2.5km west.
Skiddaw House, an isolated hostel, is the usual base. Walkers reach it on the track from the car park above Keswick below Latrigg, or along the River Caldew from Mosedale, then climb heather beside a fence to the top. You can carry on north to Knott. The ground is rough heather with a thin path.
The summit lines up with the valley running south past St John's in the Vale, so you look straight through to Thirlmere. In cloud, use the fence on the summit ridge as a guide.
