Great Gable stands at 899m (2,949ft) between Wasdale and Borrowdale, a compact pyramid when you see it from Wasdale Head. Green Gable sits 0.5km to the north-east across the gap of Windy Gap, and Kirk Fell lies 1.6km west over Beck Head. It is a Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall, Marilyn and Birkett.
Most walkers start at Honister Pass and follow the old fence posts over Brandreth and Green Gable, then drop to Windy Gap before the final stony climb. From Wasdale Head you can climb to Sty Head and take the steep, eroded Breast Route up the south-east side, or reach Beck Head and go up the north-west ridge. Expect boulders and scree near the top on every line.
The summit carries a bronze memorial plaque from the Fell and Rock Climbing Club, and a short walk south-west brings you to the Westmorland Cairn above the Wasdale crags. The Napes ridges on the south face are rock-climbing ground, home to Napes Needle. In cloud the stony top has few landmarks, and crags drop away on the Wasdale and Ennerdale sides, so take a bearing before you leave it.
