About Middle Fell

Middle Fell rises on the north-west side of Wast Water, between Greendale Gill and Nether Beck. Seatallan is the bigger hill behind it, 1.6 km north-west, with Greendale Tarn in the hollow between them. Yewbarrow lies 2.6 km north-east across Nether Beck, and Illgill Head stands across the lake to the south-east.

The usual start is the hamlet of Greendale on the Wasdale road. A path climbs the south-west ridge from the road, steep through bracken and then rocky outcrops, and levels out on a knobbly top with a cairn. You can return the same way or drop north to Greendale Tarn and down Greendale Gill. Walkers wanting a longer day add Seatallan from the tarn.

The summit looks over Wast Water to the Screes on Illgill Head and up the valley to Great Gable and the Scafell group. Parking at Greendale is limited to the verges, so get there before mid-morning in summer.
