About Whin Rigg

Whin Rigg forms the south-west end of the ridge above the Wasdale Screes, the great fans of scree that fall into Wastwater. Illgill Head, the higher end of the same ridge, lies 2.3 km north-east. From the south-east side the fell looks like a grassy moor, but its north-west edge breaks into cliffs and deep gullies above the lake.

The usual approach starts in Nether Wasdale and climbs beside Greathall Gill to the ridge, then turns north-east to the summit. Many walkers continue along the edge to Illgill Head and come back along the lake shore. The ridge path is grassy and easy to follow, and it gives views straight down the gullies to the water.

Keep back from the north-west edge, which drops into gullies such as Great Gully. The path along the foot of the Screes beside Wastwater crosses a boulder field and is slow and awkward, so allow plenty of time if you use it to close the loop.

Whin Rigg is 537 m (1,762 ft) high with 59 m of prominence. It is in Lake District C&W, England. OS grid reference NY151035. It is the 28th highest of the 70 summits Peakify lists in Lake District C&W. The nearest summits are Illgill Head (2.3 km), Middle Fell (3.7 km) and Buckbarrow (3.0 km).
