About Blea Rigg
Blea Rigg runs south-east from the high ground around Sergeant Man, with Easedale Tarn below its northern flank and Stickle Tarn under Pavey Ark to the west. At 542 m it sits a little lower than Tarn Crag, 1.5 km north. It is a Wainwright and a Birkett, though its summit rises little above the surrounding ridge.
Most people reach it from Grasmere by the path past Easedale Tarn, or from the New Dungeon Ghyll side of Great Langdale by the path up Stickle Ghyll to Stickle Tarn. From the tarn a path heads east along the crest. A third line comes up from Chapel Stile or Elterwater over Silver How and follows the ridge north-west.
The crest is a maze of rocky knolls, small pools and boggy hollows, and the highest knoll is hard to pick out. In mist the many path branches make it easy to drop into the wrong valley, so carry a map and compass. On a clear day you look across to the Langdale Pikes and down into both valleys.
Blea Rigg is 542 m (1,777 ft) high with 6 m of prominence. It is in Lake District C&W, England. OS grid reference NY301078. It is the 25th highest of the 70 summits Peakify lists in Lake District C&W. The nearest summits are Tarn Crag (1.5 km), Tarn Crag (1.2 km) and Codale Head (1.8 km).
What is the easiest way up Blea Rigg?
The gentlest approach is from Grasmere past Easedale Tarn, then up onto the ridge. The path is clear as far as the tarn and grassy and rocky above it.
Can you combine Blea Rigg with other Wainwrights?
Yes. Walkers often link it with Sergeant Man and the Langdale Pikes to the west, or with Silver How on the way back to Grasmere.
Is Blea Rigg hard to navigate?
The summit area is a jumble of knolls and pools with many small paths. In clear weather it is easy going, but in mist you need a compass to hold the ridge.
