About Scafell Pike

Scafell Pike is the highest point in England at 978m (3,209ft). It sits in the middle of the Southern Fells, ringed by rough tops: Broad Crag 0.5km north-east, Ill Crag 0.8km east, and Scafell 1.1km south-west across Mickledore. The upper slopes are a field of boulders with little grass. It is a Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall, Marilyn, Birkett and Furth, and one of the summits on the National Three Peaks Challenge.

The shortest route climbs from Wasdale Head up Brown Tongue to Lingmell Col and the summit. From Seathwaite in Borrowdale you can walk to Styhead Tarn and take the Corridor Route, a fine line across the slopes above Piers Gill. From Great Langdale the path goes up Rossett Gill to Esk Hause and along the rocky ridge past Broad Crag.

The summit has a large stone platform, a trig point and a scatter of shelters. In cloud the boulder fields look alike in every direction, and paths split towards Wasdale, Borrowdale and Eskdale. Walkers descend the wrong side often enough that you should check your bearing before leaving.
