Skiddaw rises to 930m (3,051ft) north of Keswick and Derwentwater. It is a massive fell of dark slate, with Skiddaw Little Man 1.4km to the south-east and Carl Side 1.1km south-west. The summit ridge is a bare stony crest with a trig point and stone wind shelters. It is a Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall, Marilyn, Birkett and Furth.
The tourist path starts at the car park above Keswick on Gale Road, climbs past the Hawell monument and up the steep side of Jenkin Hill, then follows a broad path to the top. The finer route comes from the west: you climb from Dodd Wood or High Side onto Ullock Pike and follow the narrow heathery ridge over Long Side and Carl Side, then up loose scree to the summit ridge.
The top is exposed to wind from every direction, and winter gales on the ridge can knock you off balance. On a clear day you look over Derwentwater to the central fells and north across the Solway Firth to Scotland.
