About Long Side
Long Side sits on the ridge that runs north-west from Skiddaw towards Bassenthwaite Lake. Ullock Pike lies 0.5 km to the north-west and Carl Side, the next higher hill, 0.7 km to the south-east. Skiddaw itself is 1.3 km to the north-east, across the head of Southerndale.
Most walkers reach Long Side along Longside Edge, the slender crest that climbs from the foot of the ridge over Ullock Pike. The path keeps to the edge, with a steep drop on the Southerndale side and open slopes falling towards the lake on the other. You need no hands, but the crest feels airy in a strong wind. From the top you can carry on to Carl Side and then climb the stony slope to Skiddaw, or drop back south towards Dodd.
The view down the length of Bassenthwaite Lake is the reason people choose this ridge over the tourist path from Keswick. Long Side is a Wainwright, a Hewitt, a Nuttall and a Birkett, with 39 m of prominence.
