About Dodd
Dodd stands at the southern foot of Skiddaw, above the east shore of Bassenthwaite Lake. Forestry covers most of the hill as Dodd Wood. Higher fells crowd behind it: Long Side is 1.2 km north, Carl Side 1.3 km north-east and Skiddaw 2.4 km north-east.
The usual start is the Dodd Wood car park by the Old Sawmill Tearoom on the main road north of Keswick. Waymarked forest tracks and paths zigzag up through the trees to the summit. The paths are clear and well made, which makes Dodd a good half-day walk and a sound choice in poor weather. In spring and summer the wood has viewing points for the ospreys that nest by Bassenthwaite Lake.
The top has been cleared of trees, and you look down on Bassenthwaite Lake, across to the north-western fells and south over Keswick to Derwentwater.
