About Whinlatter
Whinlatter rises north of the road over Whinlatter Pass, between Braithwaite and Lorton. Much of the hill lies under the conifers of Whinlatter Forest, with an open heathery ridge along the top. Lord's Seat, the highest point of the forest fells, is 1.9 km north-east, and Grisedale Pike rises 2.7 km south across the pass.
Walkers reach the open ridge from forest tracks on the Whinlatter Pass side. Once out of the trees, a path runs along the crest to the summit cairn. The ridge is grass and heather, and the forest edges can make the line confusing.
Paths on the open ridge are clear in good weather. The top looks south across the pass to Grisedale Pike and Hopegill Head, and west down the Vale of Lorton.
