Scafell rises to 964m (3,163ft) south-west of Scafell Pike, which stands 1.1km away across the narrow col of Mickledore. Its north and east faces are huge cliffs, Scafell Crag and East Buttress, while the south and west sides fall in long grassy slopes to Eskdale and Wasdale. The easier lines come from the south and west. From Eskdale you climb over Slight Side and follow the ridge north. From Wasdale Head a steep path goes up Green How. Walkers coming from Scafell Pike drop from Mickledore down the Eskdale side and climb the gully to Foxes Tarn.
Broad Stand, the rock step that links Mickledore to Scafell, is a rock climb. Walkers have died falling from it. Lord's Rake on the Wasdale side has suffered rockfall and is loose.
