Tryfan rises from the roadside beside Llyn Ogwen, a ridge of rock with steep faces on three sides. It reaches 918m (3012ft) and is a Furth, a Hewitt, a Nuttall, a Marilyn and one of the Welsh 3000s. Glyder Fach (994m), the nearest higher hill, is 1.3km to the south-west, and Pen yr Ole Wen (978m) 2.7km north across the valley.
The North Ridge is the classic route, a grade one scramble from the road that climbs over rock steps to the summit. A less direct line follows the Heather Terrace across the east face to Bwlch Tryfan, then up the South Ridge, which is also a scramble.
The summit has two standing stones, Adam and Eve. Some walkers jump between them, though the drop on one side is serious. In cloud or wet weather the rock is slippery and route-finding is hard.
