About Ullscarf

Ullscarf sits in the middle of the central fells, on the watershed between Thirlmere to the east and the Watendlath and Stonethwaite valleys to the west. It forms a long, flat ridge running north from Greenup Edge, with High Raise 2.9 km to the south. The ground is grassy and boggy, and a line of old fence posts runs along the crest. Low Saddle lies 1.2 km north.

From Thirlmere, the common route starts at the Dob Gill car park, climbs through the forest to Harrop Tarn and then picks a way up over rough, wet ground. From Borrowdale, walk up Greenup Gill from Stonethwaite to Greenup Edge and follow the fence posts north. A third line comes from Watendlath past Blea Tarn.

The top is featureless. In cloud you need a compass, and the fence posts are the best handrail along the ridge. Expect wet feet after rain.
