About Whiteside
Whiteside rises above Lanthwaite Green at the north end of Crummock Water, at the west end of a ridge that runs east to Hopegill Head. Gasgale Gill cuts deep below its southern face, separating it from Grasmoor 1.7 km south. The East Top, 0.5 km along the ridge, is a little higher at 719 m, and Hopegill Head is 1.5 km east.
The classic ascent starts at Lanthwaite Green and climbs Whin Ben, a steep heathery spur, onto the summit ridge. From the top, the crest continues east to Hopegill Head. That section is narrow, with steep drops into Gasgale Gill on the right, but it is a walk on a clear path with no scrambling.
The view west takes in Crummock Water, Loweswater and the coast. Walkers often make a round by continuing to Hopegill Head and descending to Coledale Hause and Gasgale Gill, or by adding Grasmoor.
