About Birkhouse Moor

Birkhouse Moor rises between Glenridding and Grisedale on the Ullswater side of Helvellyn. It is a long, rounded moor with a flat top and a wall running along its crest, and its prominence of 22 m makes it more a shoulder than a separate peak. Catstye Cam lies 1.5 km west and Helvellyn itself 2.3 km south-west, with Red Tarn in the hollow between them.

Most people reach the summit on the way to somewhere else. The popular path from Glenridding climbs the zigzags beside Mires Beck onto the moor, then follows the wall west to the Hole-in-the-Wall stile at the start of Striding Edge. From Patterdale, a path rises out of Grisedale to the same stile. The summit sits a short detour from the wall, on grass, and you can walk it in all but the worst weather.

The top gives a long view down Ullswater and across to Place Fell. Beyond the Hole-in-the-Wall the ground changes: Striding Edge is a narrow, exposed rock crest and a serious undertaking in snow and ice. Birkhouse Moor makes a sound turning point if conditions on the edge look wrong.
