Catstye Cam stands at 890 m (2,920 ft), 0.9 km north-east of Helvellyn, at the end of Swirral Edge. From Glenridding its neat pointed top looks like a separate mountain, though it has 62 m of prominence. It is a Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall and Birkett. Red Tarn lies below its southern slopes, with Striding Edge on the far side of the corrie.
Most people come up from Glenridding, follow the path towards Red Tarn and climb to the col where Swirral Edge meets Catstye Cam. From the col a short, steep and rocky path leads to the summit. The north-east ridge, rising from the Glenridding Beck side, gives a steeper and quieter approach.
If you continue to Helvellyn, Swirral Edge is an easy but exposed scramble on rock. In winter the upper section can carry ice and a cornice. Coming down from Helvellyn in poor visibility, walkers miss the top of Swirral Edge, so check your bearing before you leave the summit.
