Cross Fell reaches 893m (2,930ft), the highest point on the Pennine chain and in England outside the Lake District. It forms a broad, stony plateau at the north end of a line of high fells above the Eden Valley, with Little Dun Fell 2.2km to the south-east. It is a Hewitt, Nuttall and Marilyn.
The Pennine Way crosses the summit on its way from Dufton to Garrigill, passing over Great Dun Fell and Little Dun Fell. A shorter line climbs from Kirkland on the west side, following tracks to the scarp edge. Greg's Hut, a mountain bothy, sits on the old corpse road north-east of the summit.
Cross Fell is home to the Helm Wind, a strong north-easterly that pours down the western scarp, England's only named wind. The plateau holds cloud for long periods, and its flat, featureless top makes navigation hard. A cross-shaped shelter and a trig point mark the summit.
